B. Position Purpose
With our global shipping heritage, the MSC Foundation is keenly aware of the increasing fragility of our planet’s interlinked ecosystems and is committed to the restoration of vulnerable marine ecosystems, through our Super Coral Program. Our vision is to restore the critical balance between people and nature within a generation, and as part of this commitment, we are offering an exciting opportunity for a Marine Program Officer (MPO) to join our team. The MPO will support the Marine Program & Research Manager in implementing the existing Super Coral Program, managing the activities of the Marine Conservation Centre, and raising awareness amongst Ocean Cay visitors on the importance of marine conservation. S/he will also contribute to the identification and implementation of new opportunities that advance the Foundation’s mission in The Bahamas.
The Marine Program Officer will:
- Assist in the day-to-day running of the Super Coral Program (SCP) and the Marine Conservation Centre. Liaise with MSC Cruises/Ocean Cay employees and departments to ensure the timely implementation of program’s activities
- Conduct marine ecological surveys using both SCUBA and snorkel equipment
- Collect, manage, and report ecological, oceanographic, and environmental data
- Undertake roles specific to coral husbandry within in situ ocean nurseries and ex-situ coral aquarium systems.
- Maintain and clean both land-based coral aquarium as well as ocean-based coral nurseries
- Assist in writing detailed reports on conservation and research findings
- Support on all program administrative and logistic duties related to the foundation’s activities in Ocean Cay and The Bahamas (registration, official documentation submission, preparation of missions from Foundation and related stakeholders’ people to Ocean Cay, etc...)
- Organize and plan activities for interns and trainees as well as for Ocean Cay visitors, in line with the Super Coral Program deliverables, and an engagement strategy for awareness raising and outreach
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain organized records and manage the program’s data and images effectively
- Maintain equipment, research tools, and other equipment
- Contribute to maintain a collaborative and productive working environment
Diving Qualifications:
- PADI-certified Open Water Diver
- Advanced Open Water certification preferred
Marine Biology Knowledge:
- Possess knowledge of tropical marine biology
- Familiarity with coral reef ecology
- Advanced identification skills for coral and fish species in The Bahamas
- Basic understanding or recognized willingness on bio-lab operations regarding coral research in the context of a touristic operating environment
- Ability to understand or willingness to learn and analyze scientific data and research outcomes
Organizational Skills:
- Demonstrate excellent organizational skills
- Proven excellent communication and writing skills in English, a second language would be a plus
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently
- Capacity to work autonomously but in relationship with the foundation’s team
- Capacity to live positively in an isolated context (island) for longer periods
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new conservation skills.
